University of Zurich’s Secret AI Experiment on Reddit Sparks Ethics Debate

Researchers at the University of Zurich covertly deployed AI bots on Reddit, masquerading as human users with fabricated identities—including trauma counselors and political activists. The bots participated in over 1,700 debates on the r/ChangeMyView subreddit, successfully swaying opinions on contentious topics.

The experiment, which involved personas like a "Black man opposed to Black Lives Matter" and purported rape survivors, has drawn sharp criticism from Reddit moderators and legal experts. They cite ethical breaches including deception, privacy violations, and lack of informed consent.
